Der Darm ist ein komplexes Ökosystem, in dem die intestinale Mikrobiota, die Darmbarriere, das darmassoziierte Immunsystem (GALT) und ein artikuliertes Nervensystem zusammenwirken und so den Darm zu unserem sogenannten „zweiten Gehirn“ machen.
Eine quantitativ und qualitativ ausgewogene Bakterienflora (Eubiose) ist für eine ordnungsgemäße Darmfunktion unerlässlich, da sie dazu beiträgt, fremde Mikroorganismen abzuwehren, die Verdauung und Aufnahme von Nährstoffen zu fördern, das GALT anzuregen und zur Ausscheidung potenziell schädlicher Metaboliten sowie zur Vitaminsynthese beizutragen. Die Zusammensetzung der Bakterienflora kann durch äußere Reize wie Stress, veränderte Ernährungsgewohnheiten und die Einnahme von Antibiotika verändert werden.
